Breaking Barriers, Building Family: Biracial Couple’s Journey to Adopt Their White Niece Amid Bias and Love

Breaking Barriers, Building Family: Biracial Couple’s Journey to Adopt Their White Niece Amid Bias and Love

The perception that adoption is only for wealthy people with either broken families or those who suffer through infertility is not accurate. Adoption has been the most beautiful source of healing and for growing families. What could be more attractive than a helpless little angel, finally getting the love they deserve and a peaceful home?
Their story began when she first met her now husband, Drue, at a church camp in EFY. He wanted to stay in touch, so he gave her his number, but his writing was so bad that she couldn’t read it. Destiny brings back people in your life when you least expect them to. Four years passed, and never in a decade would they have thought to reconnect, but destiny had already decided their souls were meant to meet again.

On Facebook, they reconnected, and from then onwards, time flew.
In the next few months, they were dating, engaged in September, and officially married in March. It was a perfect love story! Both of them were willing to have a big family. At first, they planned to have eight kids and then seven, but the number kept reducing every time they had a baby. Before the age of thirty, they were already a family of five. The couple’s life revolved around their three beautiful children.

The decision to further expand the family always left them confused, as the pregnancies were tough and always had a chance of complications. Hours were spent in the hospital, and each pregnancy, rather than gaining weight, she lost quite a few kgs. The emotional and physical toll each pregnancy had on the couple was real, and they no longer wanted to deal with it despite the love they had for their children.

Although adoption was a common practice in Drue’s family, the couple themselves never thought of adopting a child, probably because they already had kids and the family was surrounded by joy. But they could not say no when someone approached them with a home and the opportunity to give a child a good life.
The fact that the kids who needed a foster home belonged to Dure’s biological sister made them make the decision the moment they heard the news of his sister’s arrest. They couldn’t let the children shift to foster care, and although the couple had just welcomed a baby, they did not hesitate once.

The same day the couple got the news, they drove to school to pick up two kids while a close friend took care of the third, a toddler.
The couple did try to get custody of all three children, but the court had to follow the law. The only thing that kept them at peace was that the foster care for the other children was kind, and they would be okay. The couple’s happiness couldn’t be contained when they were finally permitted to take care of the youngest, a little girl. The family needed her!

In a year, the process of adoption began, and it was an arduous journey because the adoption was from the kinship. The child had difficulty adapting to all the changes in her life, but she soon adjusted. Therapy significantly improved her feelings, and the parents had much to learn.

People judge and make hurtful comments, but the love she gets from the family covers it all. On 16th October 2019, she was officially adopted, and it made the parents recall the day their other child was born, as the joy and happiness felt the same.
They are proud and thankful to have her in their lives!
