Queen Camilla publicly backs J.K. Rowling at the royal palace as backlash against the author intensifies

Queen Camilla recently met J.K. Rowling at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where the two reportedly bonded over their shared love of books and reading.

A photo shared on The Royal Family’s Instagram showed the Queen in a deep blue dress standing alongside the world-famous Harry Potter author. The caption said the pair discussed their passion for literature and their mutual commitment to encouraging children to read for pleasure.

According to the post, they spoke about making books more accessible to young people and how reading can help open doors and create opportunities for future generations.

Both Rowling and Queen Camilla have also spoken publicly in support of victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. However, the meeting sparked backlash online, with critics accusing the Royal Family of endorsing Rowling despite the controversy surrounding her views on gender issues.

Some social media users criticised the timing of the post during Pride Month, while others described it as a deliberate statement.

Rowling has remained outspoken on women’s rights and single-sex spaces, frequently challenging organisations she believes fail to protect them. Earlier this month, she criticised H&M over mixed-sex changing rooms after an alleged incident in Bournemouth involving a man accused of filming a mother and daughter while they were changing.

Following that incident, a 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of voyeurism, with police confirming the investigation remains ongoing and urging the public not to spread speculation online.

Rowling’s comments were praised by the campaign group Women of Dorset, which said she was “100 per cent right” in raising concerns.

She has also strongly criticised youth gender medicine. Earlier this year, Rowling described certain medical practices involving transitioning minors as deeply troubling, calling the issue one of the biggest medical scandals in recent times.

Her comments came after a high-profile US malpractice case involving Fox Varian, a detransitioner who reportedly won $2 million in damages after suing medical professionals involved in approving a double mastectomy at age 16.

With the Royal Family often communicating through carefully chosen public appearances and imagery, the photo of Queen Camilla alongside Rowling has been widely seen as carrying significance beyond a routine meeting.

Buckingham Palace declined to share further details, maintaining that the discussion focused purely on their shared passion for books and literature.
