Beloved Harry Potter and Coronation Street actor Michael Byrne dies at 82

Michael Byrne, the acclaimed British character actor whose stage and screen career spanned more than six decades, has died at the age of 82. His death on June 20 was confirmed earlier today.

TV viewers will remember him best as Ted Page, Gail Platt’s estranged father in Coronation Street, a role he played between 2008 and 2010.

Film fans may know him as the ruthless Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where he starred alongside Harrison Ford and Sean Connery.

He also appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, securing his place in another hugely popular franchise.

Born in London, Byrne became known for his piercing blue eyes and commanding screen presence, qualities that made him a sought-after supporting actor throughout his career.

His Coronation Street character arrived in Weatherfield in spring 2008, reuniting with a daughter who had spent more than 50 years unaware of his existence.

The storyline revealed that Audrey Roberts had once been romantically involved with Ted when he was a soldier and hoped he would propose. After discovering she was pregnant, Audrey chose not to tell him.

When Ted eventually found Gail, he revealed within days that he was gay and had recently lost his partner of 20 years.

Despite the complicated family history, Ted became a warm and well-liked presence on the cobbles, striking up a friendship with Ken Barlow and offering support to his grandson David.

One especially emotional moment saw Ted walk Gail down the aisle at her wedding to Joe McIntyre. The character was later written out in 2021 when Gail learned of his death.

Away from Coronation Street, Byrne built an impressive filmography spanning Hollywood blockbusters and acclaimed dramas.

His performance as the brutal SS officer Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade saw him square off against both Ford and Connery in the 1989 adventure classic.

He also appeared in Braveheart alongside Mel Gibson, and played a Royal Navy task force commander assisting Pierce Brosnan’s Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies.

His work in Second World War films was particularly notable during the 1970s, with roles in The Eagle Has Landed, A Bridge Too Far, and Force 10 from Navarone.

In Apt Pupil, he delivered a powerful performance as a Jewish concentration camp survivor opposite Ian McKellen.

Byrne’s theatrical career began with National Theatre under Laurence Olivier, joining the Old Vic company in 1963.

There, he performed alongside stars including Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens in productions such as The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Trelawny of the Wells.

Like Michael Gambon, Byrne worked his way up from smaller roles and understudy work to major performances under Olivier’s mentorship.

His stage career continued well into later life, with one of his final appearances coming in director Robert Icke’s 2018 production of Mary Stuart at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

Byrne is survived by his former wife, Carole, who cared for him during his final days despite their separation. He also leaves behind daughters Tara and Bryony, as well as grandchildren Tom, Chloe and Jasmine.
