Christmas Magic: Blind, Autistic Boy and Santa Share Unforgettable Holiday Experience

This is a one-of-a-kind story about my son Matthew and the most astonishing Santa we have ever met.

Matthew is 6 years old. He was born very early, after just 24 weeks in the womb. He was a tiny boy born too early, and he had a twin brother who sadly did not survive. Matthew was in the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) for 111 days. During his time there, he required a significant amount of oxygen to survive. As a result, he acquired a severe eye issue known as stage 5 ROP, leading to his blindness.

Physicians also examined Matthew’s brain images. They informed us that Matthew probably would never walk or speak. However, God had different intentions for our young son. He walks, talks, and surprises us daily with his power and happiness.

Matthew is on the autism spectrum as well. He sees the world in his special ways and ways to acquire knowledge. One thing he likes is Santa Claus. He is very interested in Santa despite not being able to see him. He is familiar with Santa through stories and songs and always feels excited and happy whenever he hears about him.

One day during the holiday season, we visited Santa. I leaned down and quietly said to Santa, “My son is blind and has autism. He truly loved Santa.”

Santa looked at me, smiled broadly, and said, “Don’t say anything more.”

Without hesitation, he knelt on the floor to match Matthew’s height. He started speaking gently and warmly to him. He allowed Matthew to touch his beard, red dress, and soft hat.

He wished for Matthew to sense what he could not perceive. He allowed him to tug at his beard and feel everything carefully.

Then, Matthew inquired, “May I touch your sparkling eyes?”

That quote is from the poem “It Was the Night Before Christmas.” Santa softly leaned closer and allowed Matthew to feel his eyes. Matthew touched his eyes for as long as he wanted while Santa remained calm and gentle.

Then Santa asked, “Have you ever petted a real reindeer?”

Matthew said never, so Santa picked him up and took him to the reindeer exhibit. It was not an actual reindeer, but it seemed like one. Santa helped Matthew gently stroke it and shared all the details.

Matthew felt very joyful and concentrated. He had a smile and was overflowing with happiness. Seeing him filled my heart with joy. It was the most happy moment I have ever seen.

Santa took his time and did not behave as if he were overly occupied. He offered Matthew time, generosity, and an unforgettable magical experience, making Matthew feel very happy.

That day, I realized there are still caring and loving people around the world: those who understand, show concern, and make additional efforts for children like Matthew.

This was beyond simply a meeting with Santa.

To me, it was the most special and best Christmas ever.
