When Marine Joshua Ashley was killed in action, his devoted K-9, Sirius, returned home without him. To honor her son’s memory, his mother adopted Sirius—bringing home a living piece of Josh.
With a robust desire to serve and protect, my son Joshua Ashley enlisted in the US Marine Corps. He was a natural front runner, strong, and compassionate, and he defended others from an early age. Josh always looked out for others, whether he was defensive someone from bullying or leading the team on the field. He obvious to join the Marines after high school because he wanted to face the most problematic challenge and because he was repeated of 9/11.

I, as his mother, found his excellent difficult to accept. I hoped he would reconsider because I was afraid of the dangers of war. I even made it hard for him to obtain his mobilization paperwork. Josh, however, was obstinate: “I’ll move out before boot camp if you don’t stop.” Even though I cried every day after he left, I decided to let go.

Josh did very well in the Marines. He was driven, controlled, and proud. He started out as a military forces officer before becoming a K-9 handler. He was coordinated with his German Shepherd partner, Sirius, in 2011. They developed fast friends and skilled together before being sent to Afghanistan in May 2012.

Josh regarded Sirius as a member of the domestic, so they had a close bond. Before they organized, I got to know Sirius, and I could tell they were in love. Josh even envisioned to adopt him once he got back home.

But our world chop apart on July 19, 2012. I received the news that Josh had been killed in action when two Marines bashed on my door. The words were barely audible to me. I just sobbed and refused to accept it.

Everything changed after Josh’s damage. I still miss his voice, his embraces, and his holiday laughter every day. Sirius was his child, even however he didn’t have any. As Josh had intended, I assumed Sirius after his death. He brought a part of Josh home with us.

It was like behind another son when Sirius died in 2021. There are no words to describe the pain. When a child serves, the family serves, as I frequently say. Additionally, the domestic bears the pain of their loss forever.

I’m thankful to Josh’s fellow Marines and the Marine Corps for accepting me as one of their own, despite the heartache. I am aware that Sirius and Josh are now back composed, watching over Heaven’s gates.

Andy Griggs’ song “K-9 Brother,” which honors their story, captures their bond and keeps it alive. I’ll say my son’s name as long as I live. Joshua Ashley will always be recalled.
