The wish to grow your family, but not being able to conceive, is a pain no couple should go through. The love story of Nikki and Lance Bertola began more than one and a half decades ago in Utah, and ever since then, the couple has been inseparable. Lance was a local in Utah who worked full-time for an online education company, whereas Nikki moved to Utah to finish college and follow her passion for teaching. She was originally a native of California. Ever since they met, their bond was instant, like they belonged to each other, and after their first date, both knew their journey together was meant to be. Time passed, and in a year, they were standing all dressed up to say YES to staying together forever!

Although Lance was already married before, his marriage failed, so he took care of his young son, but Nikki wholeheartedly accepted him. Since day 1, she was ready to fit in the role of becoming a loving mother to his child, as she did not want him to miss the experience of getting the love of a mother. Life was perfect, their home was surrounded with love and laughter, until the couple had to experience a miscarriage. The idea of growing their family was always present, and they thought, just like their love story, it would be an easy and joyful journey; however, this time, heartbreak was their destiny.
It was not just a single miscarriage, but after the first year passed by, there were multiple miscarriages, and Nikki, a joyful soul, was physically and emotionally drained from all the ultrasounds, needles, medication, and procedures she had to go through every other day. Every visit to the hospital was a complete disappointment, and her heart was occupied by the fear of never being able to conceive a baby. Not just this, but how no single treatment showed any positive results further made her want to give up on the wish of having a baby.

Every day was a struggle, and when Nikki saw everyone around having extravagant events to announce the gender of their baby, or even telling them about their journey, she felt left out and complained to God about why they had to go through all this pain. To cope with the negative feelings and grief, the couple decided to opt for therapy and counselling, hoping to feel better and to maintain the lively environment of their house that seemed to have long gone. Moreover, this time the couple wanted to try IVF.

It was approximately three years later, on Nikki’s birthday, when she got the gift the couple had been waiting for so long. She was pregnant! Although overjoyed, she was still fearful that the pregnancy would end well because she had experienced multiple miscarriages. When the couple went in for the 7th-week ultrasound, they first prepared themselves to hear any news. However, this time, God had something special for them.

The couple did not just hear the heartbeat; something they could not even think of had happened all these years. They were having twins! The couple, with teary eyes, hugged, and all the times they stayed hopeful and patient, finally felt fulfilled. The pregnancy was smooth, and soon, Landon and Zachary, two beautiful baby boys, became a permanent and irreplaceable part of the couple’s life.
They were a compensation for all the unanswered prayers, hurt, and disappointments that the couple had to go through, and just like that, they turned two and a half in the blink of an eye. Nikki and Lance also welcomed Reece, another baby boy who is now five months old. Disappointed at first, the family had a heart full of gratitude. This is the perfect reminder for anyone going through a period of infertility, never to lose hope and give up on your dream to build a beautiful family!
