Love Across Oceans: How Letters, Distance, and Faith Turned a Chance Meeting Into a Forever Marriage

Love Across Oceans: How Letters, Distance, and Faith Turned a Chance Meeting Into a Forever Marriage

It often becomes difficult for people to continue loving each other when long distances come between them. However, the people meant to be together do not leave, no matter the distance. Elizabeth hugged him tight at the airport while tears rolled down her cheeks as she was moving to South Sudan. Not knowing how long they would get to see each other and if their love would remain the same was stuck in her head. The day she left, Elizabeth ran to the bathroom and fell sick.

It would be a 21-hour flight for her, so as not to worry him further, Elizabeth sat in a stall, trying to calm herself down before the tiring flight. When her boyfriend came to the airport to say goodbye, she realized how badly she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him, although it had been only six months since they met. It was all a coincidence, as the couple first met in a parking lot outside her apartment. Elizabeth’s friend was moving in those days, so she called Eric. Although Eric was not a close friend, fate always had its way for the two people to meet.

In the next few minutes, Eric arrived outside the apartment in an old Chevy to help, and after he came, hours were spent like minutes. Elizabeth and Eric hauled boxes, and while they made things easier for the friend, they learned how shared their faith was. Not just this, but the ease and comfort in the conversation also left Elizabeth shaken. Seeing a spark, Elizabeth told him she would move to South Sudan because of a teaching contract, as she thought this might calm everything between the two. Just a week later, Eric asked for her number, and without hesitation, she shared it with him.

The contract Elizabeth had signed also meant that her access to the Internet, electricity, and many other necessities would be minimal, and there was no way that things would work out this way, especially when they had just met. The first time the two went out, the date lasted for eight hours, and from the very first date, Elizabeth knew the connection was different, one that she could not build with anyone else before.
Eric’s humble personality and bundle of joy outshone him every time, and Elizabeth could not help but fall in love with him. Months passed, and soon, the two were inseparable.

While Elizabeth wanted to make the most of the time spent together, leaving behind the man she loved was scary. When the time to go was close, Elizabeth asked him how things would work in the long run and if he still wanted to continue, upon which, without a second thought, Eric told her that he was all set to face the distance and would not let her go.

Before Elizabeth left, the couple met each other’s families, planned their future, and kissed under a beautiful, lightning-filled sky. Later, with teary eyes, they said goodbye, but until then, they had made peace that they were meant for each other and that this love story would last forever.

While Elizabeth was in Sudan, they demonstrated their love by sending letters, more like handwritten notebooks, across continents and waiting several weeks for the other one to reply. The letters assured them that they still chose each other daily and were funny and full of love. The couple was reunited when Eric visited Elizabeth in South Africa. One year later, when Elizabeth returned, he stood at the airport waiting for her. It felt like finally coming back home after a long journey!

The couple waited no longer and got married five months later. To this day, they have been together for more than a decade. Fifteen years later, the love between Elizabeth and Eric continues to flourish. The distance could not break the love, so pure apart!
