“Love You, Later”—How a Grandmother’s Wrong Number Became the Lifeline I Didn’t Know I Needed

“Love You, Later”—How a Grandmother’s Wrong Number Became the Lifeline I Didn’t Know I Needed

You unexpectedly encounter people who bring good into your life. In October, Callie’s phone rang, but as it was an unknown caller, she did not answer. Later, the same day, a voice mail was received from the same number, and it was ‘Grandmamma Margaret’ who looked forward to reaching out to her grandson, Barry.
Callie found it adorable, and to tell her it was not the correct number, she called the grandma to explain how it was not the correct number she was reaching out to; however, the calls continued for months. Grandma did not understand how it was not Berry, the side of the phone, and she was trying to check up on her grandson each time she called. The calls were heartwarming, as to be cared for is one of the most beautiful feelings in this world.

Grandma always asked if he needed anything. For example, she asked if he wanted his pants hemmed on one call and continued telling him she was calling to chat with Barry. From time to time, Callie always responded to Grandma to remind her that the numbers were mixed up, and they would also have short conversations over the phone. It was on the 19th of December when Grandma called to wish Barry on his birthday, as once again she failed to realise it was Callie on the other side. However, Callie never minded her calls; they were not a source of disturbance. Instead, she adored the bond and love grandma had for her grandson.
Grandma called five days after the birthday call to wish Callie a Merry Christmas. Grandma told Callie how she had figured out Barry’s actual number and thanked Callie for being a great friend and patient. Hearing these messages from Grandma was a bliss, as the friendship had significantly grown all this time. Talking to Grandma was a relief for Calie as she was going through a challenging phase in life, seeing her parents parting ways because of divorce. Thus, she always looked forward to receiving a call or message from Margaret. Her voice gave Callie comfort, and peace and joy rushed through when she heard her voicemails on repeat.

Callie felt low when Margaret told her she had figured out the correct number. She thought it was the end of their conversation, but to her surprise, Grandma called a week later. It was a casual call to wish her a good day, and rather than the bond being ended, it kept blossoming further through their weekly calls, which lasted no more than five minutes but were enough to make the day ten times better.
Just like that, a year had passed, and Callie was overjoyed when Margaret invited her to visit. On the 2nd of March, Callie was finally going to see her friend, her source of comfort, in person. They were going to have lunch together, and rather than sharing laughter on the phone, this time, it would be in person.
Callie shared how comforting it was to meet Margaret in person. For once, it did not feel like it was their first time meeting each other because of Grandma’s kindness and joy. Although all of it started with a wrong number, their bond is extremely dear. Margaret is not just a friend to Callie but more like family because she checks up, wishes Callie to stay blessed, and says ‘Love you, later!’ every time she calls.
