My sister’s surprise pregnancy shook our family and I was terrified to face our parents

My sister’s surprise pregnancy shook our family and I was terrified to face our parents

I moved to Boise, Idaho when I was 21 to start the athletic training program at a local college. I didn’t know anyone except my new roommates and was feeling pretty homesick, so I signed up for Match.com, not to find love, but to meet new people and hopefully make some friends.

The first guy I matched with was Tim, a cute and athletic guy who didn’t even pay for the site. He had left instructions on how to find him on Facebook, so I messaged him there. We hit it off quickly and began texting. A few days later, he invited me to hang out at his house. Looking back, meeting someone at their house for the first time was not the smartest idea. Thankfully, Tim turned out to be the man I was meant to meet.

When he opened the door, something clicked. I never used to believe in love at first sight, but something about that moment told me he was meant for me.

We instantly connected and became inseparable. From then on, we were rarely apart at night, almost every evening was ours to share.

About a month later, we went to the pharmacy to get the morning-after pill. As we stood in line, something made me glance at the pregnancy tests. A voice in my head kept urging me to buy one. I turned to Tim and said, “Let’s take a test first, just to be sure.” He probably thought I was crazy, and honestly, I kind of agreed.

I took the test at my best friend Rachelle’s apartment. The second it turned positive, she burst into tears, and I just laughed in disbelief. I was on the Depo shot. I couldn’t be pregnant… could I? My younger sister had just announced her pregnancy, and now I had to call my parents with the same news. I was terrified.

We found a free ultrasound clinic through Planned Parenthood. That’s where we found out I was already 10 weeks along. I hadn’t even known Tim that long! It took a lot of explaining before we understood how pregnancy weeks are counted. It was confusing but clear, this baby was his.

After a lot of talking and weighing our options, we decided to keep the baby. We weren’t ready, but we knew we’d figure it out together. We eventually moved into a small basement apartment and got by with help from family.

Now, years later, we’re married with five kids and another on the way. It hasn’t always been easy, but together we’ve created a life grounded in love and partnership. I never expected this life, but I can’t imagine it any other way.
