Still Me: Navigating Pregnancy, Parenting, and the Pressure to Always Do It “Right”

The second people find out you’re pregnant, it’s like everything changes overnight. Suddenly, you’re not just “you” anymore you’re fragile in everyone else’s eyes. Even the simplest things, like carrying a bag or standing for a few minutes, seem like a big deal to them. And when the baby finally comes, the scrutiny doesn’t ease up. Tasks that used to be no problem suddenly feel like everyone’s judging whether you can handle them. It gets exhausting, though hardly anyone talks about it.

Right after you tell people, the advice starts pouring in some useful, some completely over the top. “Let me do that” or “Sit down, you need a break,” becomes common. I mean, I get it, they want to help. But sometimes it feels like they’re quietly telling you you can’t make your own choices. Being pregnant doesn’t suddenly make you incapable. Sometimes, you just want to go about your day without constant suggestions or warnings. You just want to live normally, at your own pace.

And once you’re home with the baby, it’s a whole new level. “Sleep? Forget about it!” or “Good luck finding time for yourself,” is what people say. But that’s not the whole story. Yes, nights can be rough and routines shift but it doesn’t erase happiness or the little joys in your day. Every parent figures out their own rhythm. There’s no one right way, no universal rule. That’s what makes it unique.
