Grief Took Her to the Dominican Republic, Love Brought Me Back: The Journey From Pregnancy Loss to Raising a Son

Grief Took Her to the Dominican Republic, Love Brought Me Back: The Journey From Pregnancy Loss to Raising a Son

Jacis’s life was joyous, and everything was perfect until six months before, when she discovered she was expecting her third baby. The news was no less than a miracle to her and the family, as the hope of expanding the family from four to five had vanished a long time ago, when she was diagnosed with having an IUD. She couldn’t wait to embrace motherhood until things took a devastating turn.

The doctors informed that it was an ectopic pregnancy and the baby would not survive. Not just this, she also had to be given a shot of chemotherapy to avoid any risks associated with contracting cancer and, of course, to save her life. The news broke her heart, and the side effects of the chem session made things worse as she was not just unwell emotionally now, but the physical effects were adverse too. Jaci had miscarried, but with that, she saw the pain of losing her hair because of the session.

While on some days she was able to get a hold on herself, on others she spent hours crying on the couch and questioned god about what had happened; No mother can ever be prepared to lose a child. What made it more painful was that Jaci would never be able to hold her baby either, one that she already loved so much that she counted days to meet the little angel since she got the news of her pregnancy; being a U.S immigration attorney, the weight of stress regarding her job was breaking her too, specially when she was required her to go through a traumatic asylum trial.

It’s funny how the world expects you to pretend and feel normal after you lose a piece of your heart; however, she chose herself and took a leave. This was when Jaci realised that to heal herself, she needed to bring a significant change in her life, something that wouldn’t remind her of the grief, which is why she flew to the Dominican Republic. She did all that she could to keep herself occupied most of the day so the thoughts of her recent loss wouldn’t pop up.

Jaci constantly tried to put herself back together and started teaching.

While Jaci was out with her family for lunch, she saw a boy. He was wearing oversized flip-flops and chasing the ocean waves. He was adorable, and the family invited him for pizza. To show him love, Jaci felt a connection. The mother inside of her screamed that there was something about the baby that shifted things inside Jaci. Gladly, it was not the first and last time they met, as the baby became a regular part of Jaci’s day. The kids played together, and Jaci taught him math.

Everything was fine until one casual day, the boy’s mother appeared at Jaci’s door, requesting that she adopt the baby. She looked stressed, and while Jaci had already gone through so much, she couldn’t deny her love for the baby since she saw her on the beach, so it was a yes! The next step was to apply for his visa, and he secured it with constant effort. Life became better since he became a permanent part of Jaci’s life, and in the present day, the 14-year-old boy Jaci adopted years ago is thriving at college.

Because he didn’t know how to read or write, he worked tirelessly at school and is now one of the brightest students at his college. The boy dreams of becoming a professional soccer player one day, and Jaci doesn’t know how he will support him in this and whatever he wants to achieve in life. He brought the kind of healing Jaci needed in life but did not expect. The family of four did become five, unexpectedly but beautifully!
