“He’s Still the Boy We Fell in Love With”: A Father’s Journey Raising a Cleft Baby Against All Odds

“He’s Still the Boy We Fell in Love With”: A Father’s Journey Raising a Cleft Baby Against All Odds

Matt and his wife were overjoyed after finding out they would soon welcome two babies. The thought of having twins gave them goosebumps, as it was no less than a dream come true. But when, on 3rd April 2018, it was time to deliver the babies, and the babies were finally in their arms, the room was filled with silence. Jack, the first son, was a healthy baby, but just two minutes later, when Cam was born, something did not feel right.
The mother, who waited 9 months to hold the baby, was not able to do so as he was immediately taken to the NICU, and the doctors did not say much about the citation at that time, leaving parents curious.

A bilateral cleft lip and palate was the issue. It wasn’t something that would turn out fine, but the baby born just a few hours ago would have to go through multiple surgeries and specialized care. In the initial scans, the doctors were not able to figure out that there was something wrong with the baby, for which they repeatedly apologized, but what could have possibly been done even if the parents knew?
Although the people who visited the couple to congratulate them returned after giving sympathies, some very wholeheartedly, while others looked awkward, the couple was happy.

They had never felt so much love for two tiny humans in their entire lives. They were excited to give their babies a beautiful life ahead, but were also scared of how they would be treated in the outside world.
After getting discharged, the couple decided to see a plastic surgeon for Cam’s treatment. In the blink of an eye, Nam devices were fitted. This was to prepare the baby for the major surgery, which was just a few weeks old. Moreover, as his immunity was weak as a newborn, the equipment was cleaned repeatedly, and every possible action was taken to prevent any sickness.

The parents were heartbroken to see their baby in so much pain, but they knew he would survive. Hope is what humans have at the end of the day! The parents also did not let moments pass in grief and sadness, but joy was also a part of them, e.g., the first time they saw Cam smile, they realized what love looks like. It was the day the NAM was removed, and it looked like Cam finally got some relief after days of pain.
Just in a few days, it was time for the surgery.

The parents were hurt and scared to lose the baby and for the outcomes of the surgery, as nothing could prepare them for what was coming ahead being first-time parents. The surgery was successful, and the first few days were disturbing, seeing the swollen face of the angel and hearing him cry. But the baby was happy, and his personality was shining shortly.
Present day, the baby is a warrior still fighting as he had multiple surgeries ahead, too, but the kind of joy he brings to his little family is priceless.

The parents shared the story to spread awareness regarding how abortion should never be an option, even if you find out early because Cam is just like any other beautiful baby that spreads love and laughter. They are glad to have him in life!
