“My Husband Came Out as Gay”: Mormon Couple Divorces but Stays Best Friends, Co-Parents, and Redefines Family

Before becoming her husband, Josh was his best friend for years. In the 90s, during a conversation, Josh told her he wanted to share something deep and personal. Although their bond was close, it was something big, as the hesitations on Josh’s face were apparent. So he took his time and asked her to guess, during which she asked if he was gay, but he denied it.

A wave of relief passed through her body when she heard his answer, but his face said something else. The pain that he was hiding something that couldn’t be said out loud was clear. He was Marmon, and being gay with it could be tough on him, which is why he acknowledged his answer, and they did not continue the conversation.
Members of the community who are gay are excluded and are not welcomed in the Marmon church, as they are expected to remain celibate or get into a heterosexual marriage. This is solely because of their spiritual beliefs, which can not be interfered with. Being there for each other for years and sticking together eventually made the two fall in love.

Although it was surely not the romantic kind of love, the emotional attachment was real, and Josh had always feared the idea of being lonely.
In 2002, Josh finally proposed to her, and she said yes despite knowing that, despite the beautiful bond, something was missing: the aspect of being physically attracted. Even though she is straight, he married a gay man and firmly believed that the fact that the relationship lagged would fix after the marriage.

The couple had four beautiful daughters and built a peaceful life surrounded by love and happiness. The two also became therapists and loved their profession. Ten years later, Josh became involved with and significantly connected with the LGBTQ+ community. He officially also decided to come out as gay and got married in a viral blog post.
Over time, living with a gay man, she realized how they were also like all other humans and deserved equal acknowledgement. It was not something to be ashamed of but to be honoured, and it was high time that the suppression needed to be stopped.

Although the bond strengthened and became more beautiful with each passing day, both of them soon realized that emotional intimacy and physical attraction, two necessary aspects in a relationship, were absent. In tears, the two mutually decided to part ways but agreed that the family shouldn’t be broken because of this.
Thus, they held a divorce ceremony and promised their little angels that the separation did not mean the family was now broken. They would always remain together, with love and through thick and thin. They lived in the same home and co-parented. The friendship lasted, and it was a peaceful home.

Although some people pass judgment and label it as ‘odd,’ Josh has his partner Carlos now, and they are so in love. Not just this, she has also met someone who loves her to all extents and cherishes her presence.
Although it is not a traditional family, it is beautiful!
